A Rose for the Resistance

A story that is so emotional that it brought tears to my eyes.  I read these books with much interest as my mother lived in England during WW2.  She was young but it left an lasting impression on her that is just as vivid over 80 years later.

Rose wanted no part of the Resistance.  She preferred to keep out of it.  But as the Germans invaded her town and her heart, she had to do something.

It is difficult to really believe that this happened.  We need to remember.  We have to remember.

The Lord will protect you
and keep you safe
    from all dangers.
The Lord will protect you
now and always
    wherever you go.

I received this book from Celebrate Lit to review.

Until she falls into the debt of a German solder—one who delivers a wounded British pilot to her door. Though not sure what to make of her German ally, Rosalie is thrust deep into the heart of the local underground. As tensions build toward the allied invasion of Normandy, she must decide how much she is willing to risk for freedom.

AngelaCouchTo keep from freezing in the great white north, Angela K Couch cuddles under quilts with her laptop. Winning short story contests, being a semi-finalist in ACFW’s Genesis Contest, and a finalist in the 2016 International Digital Awards also helped warm her up. When not writing, she stays fit (and toasty warm) by chasing after four munchkins.

More from Angela

The story of A Rose for the Resistance has been in the making for a while. Rosalie and Franz came to life for me in the first novel I started writing as a teenager… (not even going to mention how long ago that was). Though much of that early work will never see the light of day, I am glad I can finally share them with you.

Every November 11th since I was a child, I would sit with my dad and watch WWII documentaries and movies like A Bridge too Far, or The Longest Day which featured Sainte-Mère-Église during the D-day landings. So many of those stories beg to be remembered and I tried to include as much as I could in this novel, even in passing. Stories such as John Steele of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment who dropped into the warzone of Sainte-Mère-Église that night and his chute caught on the spire of the church. He hung limply for hours, pretending to be dead, before the Germans took him prisoner. John later escaped and rejoined his division. Or, Henry Langrehr who landed five miles from his drop zone, crashing through a greenhouse on the way down. He was unharmed from the fall, but was later wounded and captured. He lived into his nineties to tell the tale.

Many of the events and deeds of The Resistance in the novel are also pulled from history. The French citizen’s willingness to risk their lives to transport weapons and information, and to staunchly resist the brutal German occupation. It is estimated that approximately 90,000 men women – and children – were killed, tortured, or deported by the Germans for their efforts.

Though many of the characters in this story are fictional, there are so many men and women who truly did live through the horrors of the War in Europe, and more importantly risked or sacrificed their all for the freedom and lives of others.

I pray we never forget.

To Tame a Cowboy

Savannah felt trapped in her circumstances.  Brody was trapped in his memories.  Was their a way to escape?

I enjoyed this story about Savannah and Brody.  There was an attraction between them but until they could escape from their entrapments they had no future.

Have you ever felt trapped physically or mentally?  Or both? What did you do?  It's not so easy to escape.  What steps did you have to take?

It was the journey that they both had to take before they could move forward. GOD was there to guide them.  He was always there to listen.

Welcome to Seabreeze Farme

How many of us have been a relationship like Ellie's?  Her relationship with Rupert was not healthy or even loving.  She felt stuck and so alone. She was emotionally abused.

Ellie was given an opportunity to make a major change in her life. With her mother's support, Ellie moved to Seabreeze Farm.  She had no idea what she was doing and how she was going to do it.  But this was her one chance to discover who she really was and what she want from life.

I loved the story and seeing Ellie bloom in her new life.  She didn't allow the past to mess up her future.  Well, she tried not to.

A Season for Second Chances

I was at a disadvantage as this was my first Amish Bonnet Sister book I have read. And this was book # 28!!  But I soon caught on and was able to figure out who was who.

Cherish was longing for a new life.  She has put everything on hold to protect her mother.  It appears that this might just backfire on her.  She sure takes verbal abuse by some of the family members.  I kept waiting for her to go off on them but she shows restraint.  Her faith has kept her strong (so far).

Krystal has had a rough go of it.  She is trying so hard to fit in and be appreciated.  Her future decisions need to be made carefully.

The family dynamics and the problems they each have were interesting and at times, heart breaking.

I do plan to read the next 2 books in the series to see how everything turns out.  Can Cherish find happiness?  Will Krystal ever feel like she belongs?

Peace in the Mountain Haven

I have always enjoyed books, movies and tv shows about the West.  Western stories are my absolute favorites.  This explains why I can never resist reading one of Misty M. Beller's books.  Her books bring me great joy.  I really feel that I am on a journey with her characters.

Watkuese has so much to give to that special someone.  She was not ready to marry just anyone.  She even fled from her own home so that she had a choice in the matter.

On her journey, she met Hugh and his brother, Louis.  Watkuese and Hugh were careful in showing their real feelings.  They didn't want to hurt others but were also afraid to be hurt.  They were both caregivers.  But were hesitant in receiving comfort from others.

Should Watkuese play it safe and stay with her people?  Or should she take a chance?

Hugh had this belief of what type of person he was.  His brother saw him differently.  What should he believe?  Could Hugh trust his heart?

Peace in the Mountain Haven CoverThis epic journey is her best chance to find the family she and her daughter long for.

Watkuese is desperate to return across the Rocky Mountains before winter sets in. Time is running out for her to get her adopted daughter back to the familiar surroundings of the Shoshone village before the grief of her parents’ death causes irreparable damage.

Hugh Charpentier has spent his life watching over his siblings, which meant also ensuring his brother’s widow and babe are settled well into their new life. Now he’s asked to help shepherd a woman and child he barely knows across the mountains. As hard as it is to keep up with a six-year-old in the treacherous Rockies, it’s not nearly as dangerous as risking his heart to a woman and child who may not ever be his.

More from Misty

What do you love most about this genre?

I tend to be a bit of a sentimentalist, so Historical Romance is perfect for me! My favorite period is between 1800 – 1880, when the west was still an extreme frontier. I love the simpler life, where there’s no rat race. Just hard work, plenty of alone time (can you tell I’m an introvert?), and a strong family unit.

Are readers always promised a “happily ever after” in your novels? Why or why not?

Absolutely! I read as an escape, so that happily ever after is important to me. I know my characters will face challenges after the story ends, but I want to finish the book knowing they’ve grown through the story and will be able to meet future struggles with God’s strength and the support of each other—as well as family and friends!

How can readers connect with you?

What Remains True

I know that GOD has a plan for each one of us. Merry Anna and Adam might have thought differently at first.   They realized that no matter how hard they tried to be indifferent to each other; something or someone drew them closer together.

My husband and I didn't have any reason to cross paths 16 years ago. I was divorced like Merry Anna.  I had no desire to marry again.  It was not a risk I wanted any part of.  I met my husband and everything changed.  I feel so blessed that I took the chance as we are happy and so very much in love.  GOD is in control.

Merry Anna was special. She brought much joy to everyone she met.  She had a positive attitude that everything will turn out ok.   She knew GOD was there for her.

I loved the story.  I hope that there will be another book about this town and the people who live there.

The Master Craftsman

I read this title of the book and thought of how GOD knows exactly what he is doing.  We are individually made by GOD.

10 For we are God’s handiwork,(A) created(B) in Christ Jesus to do good works,(C) which God prepared in advance for us to do.

This story was quite interesting.  Based in Russia, the book tells the story of the Faberge Family and what happens to them when the world they know crumbles around them.  It seems so relevant as to what is happening in Ukraine.

The book was written in two different timelines.  The second timeline was of Ava.  She was given the opportunity to search for the greatest gift of all.

The Faberge Family and staff were experts in their crafts.  They produced exquisite eggs and other items that only the wealthy could afford.

Can Ava discover the missing egg?  Is it too late for her to discover what is really missing from her life?

A Year of Mr. Maybes

Judy Leigh wrote this delightful story of growth and second chances.  Val was devastated when her marriage failed.  She didn't know what to do with herself.  So she packed up and bought her own place.

With this move, she got to know who she was and what she wanted out of life.  It made me think of myself after a divorce.  You question everything.  What did I do wrong?  You grieve not for what it was but you wished it was.  You take tiny steps at the beginning as it is new territory.  But with time, you almost don't recognize the women that you were.

I loved the story. Life can be so unexpected.  You make the most of it.  And you never know when Mr. Maybe might just turn up.

Amish Mishaps and Murder

Two sisters, who are so adorable, grace the pages of this cute book by Samantha Price.  I just loved Ettie and Elsa-May.  They are Amish sisters who solve mysteries and crimes in their small community.

This is Book # 25.  I am new to this series.  This can be a stand alone book but it would have been handy if I had read an earlier book.

I was surprised how involved they got in the investigation.  Detective Kelly was so patient and kind to them.  He constantly warned them to stay out of the investigation.  Be safe.  But he also seemed to encourage them as they did supply him with numerous clues.

I enjoyed the book and the characters.  The sisters were adorable.  Their love for each other shone through.  How lucky that they had each other!  Snowy the dog and the sweet kitten were lucky, too!

I received this ARC copy of this  book to review from the author, Samantha Price.
