Alcoholism affects more families than we are aware of. It can become a dirty secret. The loved ones of the alcoholic live life like they were riding on a roller coaster. Never knowing what is going to happen from day to day. They become victims. They pull away from family and friends so the secret doesn't come out.
Eleanor was living this life. She tried to help her husband, Vic. But it was getting worse. What was she going to do? Eleanor didn't want to give up on her husband but Vic wasn't making it easy for her.
I have lived with alcoholics. I was surprised that Eleanor stuck by Vic for as long as she did. I don't think I could have done that. She not only stayed with him but kept quiet about it. The only person she told was her friend, Doretta. She wrote "Letters of Trust" to her. She knew Doretta would keep the information to herself. We all need a friend like that.
The book wasn't easy to read but it was worth it. A tough topic that affects so many.
