Book Excerpt
I wasn’t sure how to trust that he was guiding me and that I was hearing him and obeying him. I didn’t know if I actually did trust God as a friend or father.
Like a friend we only see at school or work, our relationships with God can sometimes be situational or limiting in how much trust we ever have to put in him. Trust is perhaps something that we all know of and yet find difficult to really define. Is it only relying on someone, to be confident that someone will do what they say? Since God isn’t physically here, I wasn’t sure how to call him up and ask him to come over and help me process life and all these thoughts, plans, and fears. There was a limitation in my understanding of how to interact with him and trust that he was there. I didn’t really understand how to rely on him, but maybe I needed to consider what I defined as trust.
This book comes from a new understanding of what trust means in relationship with God— that trust is mutual, like all relationships are. In the struggle to trust during difficulties, I knew I needed to understand a bit more about biblical trust and if (or how) it was different from the standard definition of “relying on someone.”
