A Daughter's Choice

Within three hours, I can visit an Amish town. I love visiting the area in Berlin, Ohio.  I can't really describe the feeling when we visit this lovely area. The rolling hills.  The fresh air. The sounds of the Amish wagons going by. The views and smell of the animals in the fields. 

Henrietta loves her animals. It appears that she loves them more than people. She dreams of being an assistant to the local veterinarian but knows this is not her father's wish.  He wants her to be a "proper" Amish woman.  

How can Henrietta be something she's not?  She tries but her father often disapproves.  Why can't she just be herself?

Nicholas is the new vet assistant.  He doesn't know Henrietta wanted that job. If he knew, it would explain the cold shoulder she gives him.

We all have dreams.  And at times, things or people get in the way. What's GOD'S plan for you? Both Henrietta and Nicholas need to be patient and pray that his WILL will be done.  Everything will be ok.

Research for A Daughter’s Choice leads to goats nips and cow cuddles

Each time I come up with a new story concept, I’m super excited about it. When a publisher lets me know the “pub” committee has approved a contract for the story, I get even more excited. Then I sit down at my computer, open a document, and zoom, my fingers take off on the keyboard . . . . nope . . . not exactly.

What really happens is that I suddenly realize this fabulous story idea will require a ton of research. In the case of A Daughter’s Choice, featuring goat lover Henrietta “Hen” Miller, I needed to be an “expert” on raising goats and tending to a horse with colic and making candy from goat’s milk, and delivering a foal that isn’t positioned correctly (and treating a crotchety cat!). The story also required a deep dive into several other kinds of livestock, veterinarians’ clinics and vet assistants, and facets of the Amish faith that I wanted to make sure I addressed properly.

Much of this information is easily available on the Internet and in the many reference books about the Amish I’ve acquired over the years. But on-line research doesn’t allow me to get up close and personal with key characters in my story—the animals. I especially wanted to hang out with some goats. To my surprise, I had trouble finding a place in the San Antonio area where I could interact with these frolicking creatures.

Then my daughter-in-law came to the rescue. She found Cavalry Farm, a nonprofit organization that takes in and cares for all sort of livestock animals in little Adkins, Texas, just south of San Antonio. They have frequent open houses where—for a nominal fee—the public can visit, pet, feed, and yes, cuddle some of the animals. My response? ROAD TRIP!

The farm is home to a small herd of pygmy goats as well as larger dairy goats. I have never been close to a goat, so I didn’t know what to expect. They were as curious about me as I was about them. They crowded around me, climbed up my rollator, chewed on my purse strap, nibbled at the zipper on my shorts’ pocket, and prodded my hands with their noses. I had a fabulous time!

The volunteer who stayed with us in the goat pen shared all sorts of tidbits about the care of goats. My grandson, who’s two and a half, chatted with them. I took lots of photos for marketing purposes. Most importantly, I gained an understanding of why Hen is so enamored of goats. They’re lively, friendly, and determined to learn all about their visitors.

Of course, Hen isn’t simply a “goat whisperer.” She also loves horses, which leads to her first encounter with vet assistant Nicholas Byler, a newcomer to Smicksburg, PA, and many other animals, including cats and dogs. At Cavalry Farm, I also was able to visit with horses, pigs, donkeys, alpacas, chickens, turkeys, and cows. I’m from Kansas so I’ve had my share of livestock sightings. However, I’ve never been offered an opportunity to snuggle a cow. Who knew that is a thing? My farmer family members will find it humorous, I’m sure.

The cows lounge on the grass just waiting for a visitor to come along, sit beside them, and snuggle up. It’s so stinking cute!

No cow snuggling occurs in A Daughter’s Choice. However, I can assure readers there is plenty of fun with a runaway puppy up for adoption, goats on the loose tearing through a wedding prep tent, and more. The story also moves beyond the humorous as Hen overcomes past losses and grief , allowing her to make important choices about her future. Nicholas too has to make hard choices about his occupation and his life as a faithful Amish believer.  What they decide will determine if they find their happily-ever-after!

An Heiress's Courage

It sounded like a book I would enjoy.  I didn't just enjoy it but loved it.  The main character is a young woman that had a different upbringing. She didn't expect much in life.  Her whole world changed after her uncle's will was read.

Morag Weir found herself owning a big house, shares in her family's business and quite a few headaches.  She wasn't sure who she could trust.  She did know that  Cal Fergusson played an important role in her future.

I felt a connection to Morag.  My maiden name was Weir.  How funny that was.  I also knew the area her business was located in.  I visited Helensburgh in 2023.  This is my step father's hometown.  

I love historical fiction.  I hit a homerun with this one.  I recommend picking this one up.

Amish Burial Blunder

 

One-night read.  Ettie and her sister can't help getting involved in local mysteries. Of course, the Detective encourages their behavior. And they are good at it!  

This is a cute series about two older Amish sisters who find themselves solving crimes. It's amazing all the escapades they find themselves in. This time the mystery involves an unknown corpse.  

I am so appreciative that Samantha Price is able to write such entertaining stories.  I know what to expect. I know I'll enjoy the story.  I know that there will not be anything offensive.

The Songbird and the Surveyor

I absolutely loved this book!!!

I am always impressed with the research that Denise Farnsworth does before she writes her books. This was clearly evident in reading this excellent story. The author writes about the Georgia Gold Rush.

Genevieve has a voice like an angel. Jesse works as a surveyor. And that's where the title comes from.

Both Genevieve and Jesse had trust issues. Genevieve couldn’t trust men. How could you blame her? Her guardian was a creep. She had this wall up in order to protect herself.  She never met anyone like Jesse.  With time, she could see him in a different light.

Jesse had self worth issues. His mother helped him with that. He also carried some guilt from his past behaviors. He couldn't allow himself to get close to Genevieve. 

A wonderful story.  A fast read for me.  I couldn't stop turning the page.

A Gold Rush…in Georgia?

 Did you know there was a gold rush in Georgia that began twenty years before gold was discovered in California? That Georgia gold was purer than any found in the country? Comment below if you did. And I tip my hat to you. I come across many native Georgians who are unaware of this major event in their state’s history.

My first series, The Georgia Gold Series, touched on the Georgia Gold Rush. In the ten years since its release, I’ve written novels set between the Revolutionary War and contemporary times. (I also recently got married. Thus, the name change from Denise Weimer to Denise Farnsworth. I hope you’ll look for my future novels under my new name!) The period of the 1830s is one largely untouched in American history by fiction writers. I always knew I might revisit that decade in more detail. Thus, The Twenty-Niners of the Georgia Gold Rush was born.

Gold was first discovered by white men on Coker Creek in 1827, but it wasn’t until fall of 1828, when Benjamin Parks found a nugget as he returned from filling his cattle’s lick log west of the Chestatee River, that the mining industry exploded in North Georgia. The area was flooded by prospectors who clashed with the native Cherokee people. The land was soon taken from them and divvied up in a lottery of ninety-two districts, with farming plots set at a hundred and sixty acres and gold lots at forty acres. By June of 1832, almost six hundred surveyors from across Georgia were hard at work.

The gold belt stretched from Clarkesville to Canton (the setting of book two), with major concentrations near Dahlonega (the setting of book three). Auraria, located on the mountain ridge between the Etowah and Chestatee rivers, was one of the boom towns that lingered into the twentieth century, although now only a few abandoned buildings remain. Think Wild West before the west went wild. Into this setting I dropped the story of a guilt-haunted surveyor with a dangerous streak of wanderlust and an orphan who’s learned to sing for her life.

Genevieve Gillbard’s neglectful father has died and left her in the care of her guardian, a volatile saloon owner with unwholesome intentions. To Reveal A Reckless Love

I was invited to read this book by Robin Hatcher.  The cover was beautiful and I was eager to start.

Victoria found herself stranded by the side of a stagecoach. The coach was not going anywhere. She wasn't sure what to do. It didn't take long before she was rescued by another coach headed in her direction. She was searching for her lost brother.  But what she found changed her life completely.

The location of this story was the western part of the US.  Ms. Hatcher described the views as an artist would.  It was breathtaking.  And Roger, an artist, attempted to capture this in his art.

The relationship between Victoria and Roger started out friendly. But with time, they both felt much more.  

Did Victoria ever find her brother?  Did she lose her heart in the process?  And what role did Hope have in her future?

A Hidden Hope

Dok had her hands full. She had a lot on her plate.  She was not only busy with her practice but was supervising two new doctors and a nurse.

An entertaining story of the Amish and the Englishers living together in this country community.

Bishop David, also Dok's brother, owned a shop but he was the leader of the Amish community.  He also carried a heavy load.  At times, something or someone fell through the cracks.

Evie loves being a nurse. She is heads over heels in love with Charlie, a new doctor.  She is trying hard to not let her feelings show.  Charlie finds it difficult to pass the necessary exams to make his dreams come true.

Wren will be a great doctor.  Things come easy for her. But she has a hidden agenda for wanting to be supervised by Dok.

Annie, poor Annie, wants to be an EMT.  But something stands in her way.

I highly recommend the story.  I loved all the characters. Fern and Birdy have the most common sense.  They cook great meals and supportive to all in the community. 

I can't get enough of these type of stories.  Wonderful characters. Enjoyable storyline.

About The Author

Suzanne Woods Fisher is a Christy finalist, a Carol and Selah winner, a two-time ECPA Book of the Year finalist, and Publishers Weekly and ECPA bestselling author of more than forty books. Her genres include contemporary and historical romances and Amish fiction. Suzanne and her husband live in a small town in northern California. Most friends act a little nervous around her because they usually wind up in one of her novels. She has four grown children and enough grandchildren to keep her young.

Whenever I visit my Amish friends, I always make a point of wandering out to their vegetable gardens to see what’s growing. Their gardens, usually not far from the kitchen, are bigger than most people’s backyards. Gardens, for the Amish, are a family affair. Husbands help their wives ready the soil and add the homebrewed fertilizer (ahem, manure), children help their moms plant, weed, and harvest.

Like so many parts of the Plain life, their value of the home garden—for the sake of nutrition, for sustenance, for well-being—is a wonderful example to those of us who weren’t farm-raised. They’ve been living a sustainable life filled with fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables for over four hundred years. The rest of us are just catching on.

One Amish mom told me a story about her daughter, the youngest of seven. “This girl was a born worrier. Whenever she started on her worry loop, I would send her out to weed in the garden. When she came back in, her worries were gone. There’s just something about weeding that helps a soul settle down.”

I could expand that thought a little further. There’s just something about gardening that helps a soul settle down.

So, it’s late on Saturday and I just wrapped up a very long week. I spoke at three book events and finished the first draft (the drafty-draft) of a novel. I can’t stop thinking about the novel. Is it a mess? As tired as I am, tonight I don’t think I’ve got one more word in me—not to speak, not to write. I’m spent! Done. My husband is out for the evening, so I had a few hours alone at home to relax.

What did I do?

I planted in my garden: lettuce and radishes and carrots. As I dug in the spongy soil, I could feel my soul settle. Worry and exhaustion slipped away as I scattered seeds into furrows. Little by little, that wonderful God-given sense of re-creation returned. Tomorrow, I would write again. Time spent in my little garden does that for me. It renews me and gives me a hope for the future.

Or, at the very least, a good salad.

Overnight Blueberry French Toast

On a sunny July morning, we were served this breakfast dish at an Amish friend’s home and my husband couldn’t stop talking about it. You might be shocked at the amount of eggs, but don’t skimp! It’s worth every bite.

12 slices bread cut in 1” cubes

8 oz. cream cheese cut in ¾” cubes

1 ½ cup fresh or frozen blueberries

12 eggs

1/3 cup maple syrup

2 cups milk

Place half the bread cubes in a 9×13 baking dish. Top with cream cheese blueberries and the remaining bread. Beat eggs, syrup and milk and pour evenly over bread.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until well done.
