About the Book
Book Title: The Bible Companion Book 2 Leviticus-Deuteronomy
Author Name: Karen Westbrook Moderow
Genre: Bible Study
Do you struggle to relate to God in the Old Testament?
The Bible Companion Book 2 can help. Its simple one-chapter-a-day format lets you engage with Scripture without the pressure of schedules, homework, or heavy reading loads. Short daily readings and thought-provoking questions help you recognize God’s faithfulness even in your most difficult journey.
Though filled with unfamiliar symbols and rituals, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy hold treasures—the great promises of God. They show us the lengths to which God goes to be in our daily lives. Hard-to-read passages come alive as we travel with Israel to the Promised Land and discover the same God who guided His people in ancient times guides us today. If you want to know what God is like and what matters to Him . . . if you question His love for you . . . if you wonder how believing God can change your life, these books of the Law will speak to you. For personal and group study.
Book Excerpt
Anything offered must be without blemish—all offerings must be the very best (Lev. 1:3). Some ingredients are specifically excluded. Yeast is forbidden, as it’s a reminder of Israel’s hasty departure from Egypt (Deut. 16:3). In the New Testament, yeast symbolizes evil (Luke 12:1; 1 Cor. 5:8). Honey is also forbidden, possibly because it ferments (decays), or perhaps because of its use in Canaanite cultic religions.14 Salt, however, is required. Its preservative nature speaks to the enduring quality of the covenant.15
The grain offering is a voluntary act of worship. It does not involve animal sacrifice but is prepared with foods grown in the field. This offering shows gratitude for God’s provision.16 The idea that the first and best portion of our blessings belongs to God will soon become a command to tithe (Deut. 14:22). In time, tithing as a law will pass away, but the principle remains: we are to express our gratitude for God’s grace and blessings through generous giving.
