The Rise and Fall of Miss Fannie's Biscuits

A cozy Amish Mystery.  This is what is on the cover of this cute, new book by Wanda E. Brunstetter and Martha Bolton.  You can't help loving the cover.

This is a who done it story centered on a baking contest.  This contest is a really big thing in Tuscarawas County.  And someone is out to sabotage the whole thing!

Frannie Miller is quite a character.  She's an Amish woman who desperately wants to win the contest. Does she even have a chance?

Her friend, Foster Bates, is a retired cop turned private investigator.  He wants no part in this investigation. But Frannie has her ways in getting him involved.

It is a "sweet" story.  Get it? A sweet story with intrigue, possible romance and sweet rolls!

Pick up the latest book by my favorite Amish author. I always know that I will be entertained by her books. I also know that I can give this as a gift to my 87 year old Mom without offensive language and explicit content.

A great gift for everyone.

I received this book to review from Wanda's Clippity Clop Club.

About the author

Wanda Brunstetter is an award-winning romance novelist who has led millions of readers to lose their heart in the Amish life. She is the author of over 100 books with more than 12 million copies sold. Many of her books have landed on the top bestseller lists, including the New York Times, USA Today, Publisher's Weekly, CBA, ECPA, and CBD. Wanda is considered one of the founders of the Amish fiction genre, and her work has been covered by national publications, including Time Magazine and USA Today.

Wanda's fascination with the Amish culture developed when she met her husband, Richard, who grew up in a Mennonite church, and whose family has a Pennsylvania Dutch heritage. Meeting her new Mennonite sister-in-laws caused Wanda to yearn for the simpler life. In their travels, she and her husband have become close friends with many Amish people across America. Wanda's desire to explore their culture increased when she discovered that her great-great grandparents were part of the Anabaptist faith.

All of Wanda's novels are based on personal research intended to accurately portray the Amish way of life. Many of her books are well-read and trusted by the Amish, who credit her for giving readers a deeper understanding of the people and their customs.

Wanda's primary attraction to the Amish is their desire to live a devout Christian life that strives to honor God, work hard, and maintain close family ties. Whenever she visits her Amish friends, Wanda finds herself drawn to their peaceful lifestyle, sincerity, and close family ties, which is in stark contrast to the chaos and busyness that plagues so many modern "Englishers." Time and time again, Wanda loses her heart in the Amish life, and she hopes her readers will, too. For more information, visit: www.WandaBrunstetter.com

What I Left For You

I literally just finished the book at 1:29 am.  I can't sleep. I lay here thinking of how heart wrenching that this really happened.

I know first hand the havoc that occurred during WWII.  My mother was a young child in England but she remembers the sacrifices that were made during this time.  She remembers family members who didn't come home the same. She remembers the joy she felt when she had a bit of a egg.  She remembers the sirens signaling the need to go into the shelters.

I can not even fathom how many survived and died during this war. Terrible things happened and we ask why?  We don't have the answers. I'm sure many questioned their faith. Many others depended on their beliefs and prayed for the end of this terrible catastrophe.

Helena suffered greatly.  Emotionally and physically.  She held on to her faith that GOD will bring an end to this.

A powerful book. A book I won't forget.

I received this book from Celebrate Lit to review.

About the Author

Liz Tolsma is the author of several WWII novels, romantic suspense novels, prairie romance novellas, and an Amish romance. She is a popular speaker and an editor and resides next to a Wisconsin farm field with her husband and their youngest daughter. Her son is a US Marine, and her oldest daughter is a college student. Liz enjoys reading, walking, working in her large perennial garden, kayaking, and camping.

More from Liz

I stared at my computer screen in front of me. For years, I had been searching for my great-grandmother, Anna. I got no good information. Census records in the US weren’t helpful. Some listed her birthplace as Czechoslovakia, while others had it as Austria. I had heard before that she might have been born in Czechoslovakia before, but never Austria. There were no records that I had come across that listed the city or town where she was born.

Until that one day. While searching for my great-grandmother, I ran across a passport application recorded in Warsaw, Poland, for an Anna with the same last name, though spelled differently. Her birthday was listed as 1903, which matched the birth year I knew for my great-grandmother’s niece. As I read through the application, my heart was pounding. This Anna was born in the United States but went to Dubne, Poland, with her family in 1906. It was now 1923, and she wanted to return to the US, and she would be living with…

I started to cry when I saw who her sponsor was. My great-grandfather. The name and address were correct. There could be no doubt about it. It had taken me years, but I finally made the jump to Europe and discovered that my great-grandmother was not born in Czechoslovakia but in what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire and is now Poland.

Of course, good little researcher that I am, I had to find out all I could about Dubne, the town they were from. That’s when I first came across the term Lemko. What on earth was that?

Lemkos are a Slavic people that settled in the Carpathian Mountains of Southern Poland, Northern Slovakia, and Western Ukraine. They are also known as Lemko Rusyns, Rusyns (especially those born in Slovakia, like my great-grandfather), and Carptho-Rusyns. The mountains kept the world at bay, and they developed their own language, customs, and form of Christianity. For the most part, they were very poor, many of them eking out a living from the rocky ground.

They lived in “black houses,” called that because the poorest people couldn’t afford to have a chimney built. The smoke from the cooking and heating fires stayed inside the house and covered the walls with black tar. If you look at the cemetery records from Dubne, you would be old if you lived into your fifties. Conditions were brutal.

The most the average Lemko could afford was one sheep or one pig. Since this was their most prized possession, they couldn’t take the chance of a wild animal or a neighbor taking it away, so it lived in the house with them.

With all of them. Up to eleven people would live in a two-room house. When I mentioned that in What I Left for You, my editor questioned if I had made a mistake. No, I didn’t. I have no idea how they fit all those people in there, but they did. As I was tracking one branch of our family tree, I kept coming up with people living in house 43. Over and over and over. They stuffed that house full. Grandparents, parents, and children all lived together. They may not have had much, but that forged the Lemkos into strong and resilient people.

I’m proud to be Lemko-Rusyn, and I’m thrilled to share this story with you. I infused Helena, the historical heroine, with as much of the Lemko spunk and spirit as I could. Last October, my daughter and I had the privilege to travel to Poland and Slovakia and see the Lemko homeland for ourselves. It helped me to write a better, richer story because I now understand where they came from and who they were. Enjoy Helena’s story and her journey during WWII and beyond. I hope you come to understand and appreciate the Lemko people as much as I have.

A Stolen Kiss

One kiss. That's all it took and their lives were changed forever.  A cute story of two Amish people who never expected to find themselves in this predicament. It's ard to comprehend that one kiss could cause such an uproar.

Ben had no plans to settle down any time soon.  LeEtta was not expecting to ever marry.  Ben felt he needed to prove himself from his poor behaviors of the past. LeEtta felt responsible for her father's sorrow.

There were wonderful characters included in this story.  It's difficult to pick one I liked more than others.   Aunti Oneida probably was my favorite.  She was so joyful and loving.  Her personality felt like getting a warm hug.

It was a delight to read this.  I will be looking for more books by Mindy Steele.  I rate it 5 stars.

Taking work far from home, Ben hopes to earn enough to build his future, but nowhere in his plans did he predict being kissed by a beautiful stranger – or having to marry her. To save both their reputations he has little choice but to accept the elder’s demands. Well. . .if LeEtta thought he’d flinch, letting her boldness ruin the future he had all mapped out, she was mistaken. He has a dream to work for, and if he has to make sacrifices to reach them, so will she.

Who kissed who first? He couldn’t even remember anymore.

The Story Behind the Story with Mindy Steele

A Stolen Kiss

I’m always seeking the not-so-ordinary plot for one of my stories. So, when our youngest son and his intended traded a look one evening, something struck a cord in my always moving imagination. Mind you, Blake told me when he was ten, riding a new bus to a new school, that he met the girl that he was going to marry. So cute, yet, they married in May, eleven years later. A Stolen Kiss is not love at first sight. It’s not even love over-the-years, but that one moment birthed a new character. LeEtta Miller. Not all love stories are as beautiful as our son’s, but all love stories are worth telling.

I’m an author of romance, love inspired stories weaving through rural landscapes where characters unveil themselves into realistic people most of us are glad to know. Romantic fiction gives readers what no other genre seems to offer. It’s an escape, a hope. Hope across illness, loss, despair, and uncertainty. Its community, knowledge, a gathering of friends, unity, while representing comfort.

We all want to add more love to our lives. After all, it is the greatest gift God has given us. Gentle or fast moving, we are sucked in to reach those glorious chapters of a first kiss and a promising tomorrow.

But, what if the kiss came sooner? What if love isn’t fast moving, but something earned and quietly obtained through slow familiarity.

LeEtta Miller is quite the rule follower and people pleaser. I’ve shaken my head at her quite often as I got to know her. LeEtta also feels as if life is passing her by. How many times have we’ve been in those pair of shoes? In one bold moment, she’ll through caution to the wind, and act, impulsively. Thus we get introduced to Benuel Ropp, who’s visiting his grandparents, hoping to earn enough money to buy his own land, back in Ohio. As events escalate, from a chance meeting to an binding union, these two young characters are thrown into new roles neither of them intended. I’ve never laughed more writing LeEtta and Ben’s story, and hope it brings joy, hope, and a wiliness to accept that the mistakes we make in life, are only rocky paths leading us to where we belong.

May you never stop making mistakes and following love’s calling,

Mindy

Samantha Price- Dread

Trust.  It sure is difficult to "trust" Trust. She never seems to learn.  She is in one mess after another.

Jack from the FBI wants to believe her but come on...

Trust wants to lead a honest life. She wants to belong. She even has some interest in Jack. But what chance is that? A law abiding officer with a former crook?

You never know what is going to happen next.  It is quite a page turner. Just one book to go in this exciting series. ☹️

Samantha Price knows how to entertain you. I've loved every book that I've read.

Dark Times for the Clark Factory Girls

Historical Fiction at its best.  I think that this is my favorite genre.  I was introduced to May Ellis a few years ago. I have enjoyed every book (this is the 3rd of the series) and loved getting to know Kate, Louisa and Jeannie even more. They work together at the Clark Factory and have become the closest of friends.

The book continues with the girls attempting to survive the losses of their  loved ones. The continuing war brings more heart break and fear.

I will wait, but not so patiently, for the next book. I need to know how the girls forge ahead during these difficult times.

Thank goodness the Clark Girls have each other.

Family Ties on Beamer Street

Life isn't always what we expect. Things can happen that will change the course of our lives.

Peggy was proud of the life she made with her husband, Dar. But one terrible accident changed everything.

Peggy was stronger than she thought.  When times got tough, she got tougher. She had to provide for her family.

I really liked Peggy. She was determined to give her children a better life than she had. She was determined to save her home.  She didn't waste time in questioning "Why me?".

Beamer Street was a great  place to live. Neighbors became family.  They were there to help each other out. Sadly, you don't see that much today.  I have neighbors that I have never met.

I loved the book.  Peggy was a character that you can root for.

December 30, 2024

Tomorrow is New Year's Eve.  Where did this year go?

We spent quite a few days watching our grandkids in all their activities. They are busy swimming, cheering, playing football and one being in the marching band as drum major. Two Christmas concerts and one play ended the year.

We took a fantastic trip in September with my Mom to Canada.  We visited my Dad's grave and we were sad to see the small graveyard so run down.😞 We met up with many of my paternal cousins. And for Mom, she got to have her roast beef and yorkshire pudding.

We had a great time in Holland, Michigan with our daughter who lives in Tennessee.  We had some very special moments with our great grandson as well as one of our grandsons and grand daughter.

Mike and I took a cruise in May. We visited the Upper Peninsula for a few days. In Berlin, Ohio we visited Amish stores and had a yummy dinner. We went to Shipshewana, Indiana to see Clay Walker and Tracy Lawrence in concert. And to Toledo, Ohio to see Donny Osmond. Wow, I love him!!

This year we have spent special moments with our friends.  Two of my girlfriends came to Michigan for a quick visit.  It was great to see my friends and meet them for lunch. We have had many lunches with a dear couple this year.  Much laughter and thrifting!

After many years, I finally heard from my Uncle.  He lives in England.  We lost touch for some reason.  It is great to catch up with him now.

We spent a lot of time at Greenfield Village.  We live so close. We enjoy having a membership.

We also experienced being in a suite at a U of M football game.  What an experience!! Thanks, Matt.

Christmas was special this year.  We had a great time opening our Christmas crackers and blowing our whistles!  Go ahead and ask me about that.

My love for my husband continues to grow. We now have been married 17 1/2 years.  We have been blessed.

Whew! What a year.

I pray for continued great health for my Mom, our siblings, our extended families, our children and grandchildren/great grandchild.

Wishing you all a Happy New Year.

PS:

What was I thinking!!!  We also added a new member to our immediate family when our grandson married his bride in October. We travelled to Tennessee for the wedding.  It was different as it was on Halloween.

We then went to Georgia to visit Mike's brother and his wife.  We had a great time seeing them.

Amish Friends Comfort Foods Cookbook

I am not known as being a cook.  I am usually the one that brings the pop or napkins to a party.  I sure don't expect to be the next Food Network star.

I just received this cookbook from one of my favorite authors- Wanda Brunstetter. I love the layout and how it lays flat on the counter top.  It contains fantastic and pretty easy recipes to follow.  I can find quite a few that will grace our kitchen table in years to come.

I highly recommend this cookbook. It would make a fantastic gift for the new bride, the mother who needs something to feed her family and even me who doesn't particularly love being in the kitchen.

A great collection for all to enjoy.

I received this cookbook to review from Wanda's Clippity Clop Club.

Samantha Price- SECRET

Trust finds herself once again risking everything. One false step she'll be in jail again.

This book was more exciting to me than the others in this series. I can't figure out why Trust finds herself in one bad situation after another. Is it the thrill?  When will she learn? What will it take for her to stop? She's really not that bad! You can see that she does have a heart. She does a great job of hiding her soft interior.

I received this book from the author to review.

Cloaked in Beauty

Letty Hood lived life free from obligations and societal rules. She had no one but her grandmother and her trusty friend, Rusty.  Letty loved Rusty with all her heart.  What was strange was that Rusty was a wolf.  She was hidden away from others because she was in danger. Her mother went to great lengths to protect her.  Her grandmother gave up everything to keep her safe.

Philip was hired by Letty's mother to bring her home and to keep her safe.  But was she even safe from Philip and his affections?

The story was quite similar to Red Riding Hood. But in this story the Big Bad Wolf wasn't bad.  The red cloak was her protection. She wasn't in danger when she was with grandma but when she left her.

The woodsman, Philip, was still the one who saved her. He was there to protect her and bring her home.

It was an exciting book. I loved it. You never knew what to expect from one page to another. Letty's grandmother often quoted Bible verses that gave Letty wonderful advice. It gave her strength and courage to go forward.

I loved her grandmother the most. She made sure that Letty knew that GOD had plans for her and was by her side at all times.

I received this book from the author to review.
